Wedding at Baywood Greens in Long Neck, Delaware

January 28th, 2012

I have photographed many weddings alongside Rob Korb Photography and I haven’t yet posted any of these images. The dreary winter months seem like the perfect time to change this and showcase some of the beautiful flowers that bloom at Baywood Greens – the kind of backdrop wedding photographers in Delaware dream of!

Neil van Niekerk’s Photography Workshop Review

January 3rd, 2012

I have taken many workshops and courses in an effort to continuously improve and advance my photography skills. One aspect of photography I am always working on is building a more solid understanding of lighting and flash photography. A few years ago while Googling the phrase “flash photography”, one of the first pages I accidentally stumbled upon was that of Neil van Niekerk’s Tangents photography blog. I read as much as possible and eventually purchased both of his books. One is a book about on camera flash and the other is a book about off camera flash. Both were very helpful, but I wanted to learn more with a real live teacher.

In October I had the opportunity to take Neil’s photography lighting workshop in NYC. Listening to Neil speak and explain things in real time, really made his books come alive for me. Bells were going off left and right. I finally felt like I was “getting it.”

Neil taught us the bare basics up to more advanced techniques and along the way he made sure each and every participant reached a firm understanding before we moved on to the next lighting concept. He makes sure the foundation is solid before building and adding more, so nothing was ever confusing or overwhelming – just enlightening.

We learned how he uses his famous black foamie thing to create studio quality lighting with only on camera flash, off camera flash, gels, video lights and how to balance flash photography with natural lighting.

My only regret is that I didn’t take this workshop years ago when I first started photographing weddings and taking photographs of my daughter inside my house, where the black foamie thing has been a particularly useful concept.

Below are a few of my favorite photos from the workshop. Thank you so much to Neil and the beautiful models — I had a great time and learned a lot!

Jessie & Art’s Engagement Session at Fifer Orchards – Dover, Delaware

December 3rd, 2011

Jessie & Art chose Wyoming, Delaware near Dover, for their fall engagement photos. They first mentioned Wyoming Mill Pond, but after driving around the area for a bit, I passed by Fifer Orchards and was quickly excited by all of the beautiful color and sunlight beaming through the exhausted peach trees. I am so thankful to the people at Fifer Orchards for allowing me to shoot these photos on their property.

The setting couldn’t have been a more perfect for the fall backdrop that Jessie & Art were hoping for!

“T” Family Pictures in Longwood Gardens

September 18th, 2011

I had a great time taking photos of the “T” family one hot summer day at Longwood Gardens – one of my favorite locations to take portraits!! It was such a scorcher that morning that the staff at Longwood were actually giving out free water! Thank goodness for these two beautiful, sweet children and their easy going temperaments. :)

Miss T & Mr T’s reward for being such good subjects was a jaunt around the cool water-play area of the children’s garden at Longwood.

Thank you to their mom for letting me spend so much time to make sure I got all of the photos we needed!! :)

Rebecca & Tim’s Wedding at Deer Creek Overlook – Maryland

August 2nd, 2011

I knew I was going to enjoy photographing Rebecca & Tim’s wedding after Rebecca told me about all of the beautiful natural elements she planned to include in the decor. She designed and created many of the wedding related items you’ll see in the photographs below — isn’t she super talented!? I also absolutely loooved her dress. If my husband and I ever decide to renew our vows, I might have to seek out a dress by her designer!

Rebecca and Tim, as well as the family and friends that I met of theirs throughout the day were all so kind and welcoming. Thanks again to Trisha & Brandon for sending them my way! :)

Rebecca & Tim’s Engagement at Rocks State Park – Maryland

July 21st, 2011

I feel so lucky that Rebecca and Tim chose Rocks State Park as the location for their engagement photos in early spring of this year. I had never been to this location or even heard of it before Rebecca asked that their photos be taken there. Not only is it gorgeous, but the area is important to Rebecca because she spent a lot of time there when she was younger. In fact, if it weren’t for Rebecca’s efforts, this local treasure wouldn’t be a part of the Maryland State Park system. Rebecca, along with other students in her school, helped fund the purchase of this land by the state, which prevented the area from potentially being turned into a development. Could you imagine this beautiful waterfall becoming a part of some neighborhood’s community property? The waterfall and the nearby “King and Queen Seat” can also be seen in the movie “Tuck Everlasting.”

This was a very adventuresome engagement shoot. We hiked quite a way to get to the falls and in trying to get -below- the falls, we had to cross a tree that had fallen over the river. We even passed a few snakes along the way (I saw -one-… but I know there must have been more!! hah!!)

Trisha & Brandon’s Wedding at Valley Country Club – Maryland

July 19th, 2011

I first photographed Trisha and Brandon’s small back yard ceremony last year and did their engagement portraits last fall (we did things a little out of order!) This April they had a larger celebration and reception at Valley Country Club in Baltimore, Maryland. I am so thankful that Trisha and Brandon have entrusted me to photograph these important moments for them. They are a really wonderful people, and are surrounded by equally wonderful family members. I love photography, but having clients like Trisha and Brandon, as well as the friends they continue to send my way, really reinforces my love of not only photography, but my JOB! Thank you, Trisha & Brandon!!
